M3 Explain Decision To Recruit Former BLACK SABBATH Singer
June 4, 2003M3, the "classic WHITESNAKE" tribute band formed by ex-BLACK SABBATH singer Tony Martin and former WHITESNAKE members Bernie Marsden (guitar),Micky Moody (guitar) and Neil Murray (bass),recently launched their official web site at this location. The band, whose live show consists exclusively of WHITESNAKE's classic songs of the late '70s and early '80s, are currently touring Europe.
In a lengthy interview posted on the site, Marsden, Moody and Murray discussed their decision to ask Martin to sing for the group.
"Tony actually called me in February for some advice, having been involved with SABBATH for 10 years he wanted to make his own mark in the industry, but with a history of BLACK SABBATH, it can be hard," Marsden said. "Having been in quite a big band myself he asked me how I coped with it, after discussing being members of giant bands he then asked me what plans I had. I told him that I would be looking for a singer for M3, and the rest is history.
"Tony, really, is a great singer, more melodic than some of the SABBATH material shows," he added. "Some of his solo work is closer to M3. We have known each other a long time, he almost joined ALASKA in the 1980s with me. I called Micky. Neil, of course, was in BLACK SABBATH with Tony, and with the late and lamented mate Cozy Powell, I think [Cozy] would approve of this line up, he was a big fan of [M3 drummer] Jimmy [Copley] as well."
Micky Moody commented: "It's always a difficult job to step into somebody else's shoes, and Tony's doing fantastically well with the 'SNAKE material. He's a great singer and a very, very nice chap!
Neil Murray added, "[WHITESNAKE leader David Coverdale and Tony Martin are] both excellent singers, though Tony doesn't have David's blues roots. David has a very forceful personality, for better or worse, and that's a good thing to have as a frontman, and any singer who works with Bernie, Micky and myself has to live in the shadow of that. Tony is a very good songwriter, and I look forward to us all doing some writing sometime, once M3 is a bit more established."
